BANGKOK (4 Sept 2011) – ASEAN powerhouse Thailand fell to their second defeat in the on-going final qualifying round of the 2012 Olympic Games at the Shandong Sports Centre in Jinan, China – this time losing to 5-1 to Australia.
The Thai women had earlier lost 3-0 to world champions Japan in the first game of the qualifiers.
But this time round, the Thais simply had no answer for the physically superior Aussies when they conceded four goals in the first-half goals including a brace for Michelle Heyman (15th and 34th minute).
The other goals for Australia were scored by Kyah Simon (13th minute), Tameka Butt (45th) and Emily Van-Egmond (58th) as Thailand scored their only goal in the game off Dangda Taneekarn in the 59th minute.
With the loss, Thailand are at the bottom of the six-team qualifying group with only the top two teams making the passage to London next year.
Thailand’s next match will be against hosts China – who are still without a win after two matches – tomorrow.
