SYDNEY (18 April 2014) – With just weeks left to the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Vietnam next month, the Football Federation Australia (FFA) have announced Alen Stajcic as the new coach of the team.
The head coach of the Sydney FC W-League team will replace Hesterine de Reus, who had left the position.
“After a review by FFA it was determined that a change in coaches was in best interests of the Matildas programme,” a press release quotes FFA chief executive David Gallop as saying.
Gallop thanked Hesterine for her efforts over the past 15 months and wished her the best for the next stage of her coaching career.
A comprehensive review of the Matildas programme, including the head coach position, will be conducted after the tournament, the press release further states.
The 2010 champions will take part in the continent’s flagship women’s national team competition to take place in Ho Chi Minh City from 14 to 25 May.
The Australians will battle it out in Group A of the competition along with Vietnam, reigning world champions Japan and West Asian debutants Jordan.
They will kick off their campaign by taking on Japan on 14 May.
