HANOI (28 Sept 2012) – Given the standard of the women’s game currently and also the scenario surrounding the qualifying round of the next FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015, there is every chance that for the first time ever, a team from ASEAN will make it to the world stage.
FIFA had announced that the next Women’s World Cup in Canada in 2015 will be expanded from 16 teams currently to 24 teams. In Asia, this is equivalent to an increase to five slots from three previously.
It is almost a certainty that these slots will be taken up by defending world champions Japan, South Korea, Australia and China. The fifth slot would usually go to DPR Korea but with them having been banned from the next World Cup for doping, it has opened the doors to teams from ASEAN.
