CHONBURI (20 August 2019) – Vietnam won Group B of the AFF Women’s Championship 2019 in commanding fashion when they whitewashed Myanmar 4-0 in the final match of the group that was played this afternoon at the Institute of Physical Education.
Both Vietnam and Myanmar had already qualified for the semifinals of the championship this year, with the game today just to decide the winner of the group for the crossover later.
“We made some changes to the line-up and the players did well to win the game and also the group,” said Vietnam head coach Mai Duc Chung after the game. “Now we will prepare for the semifinals and prepare as best as we can against any opponents.”
With a perfect record of two wins from two matches played and scoring a whopping 17 goals in the process, Vietnam were not about to let slip of a perfect outing in the preliminary stage.
Just two minutes in and Vietnam sent the signal that they meant business when Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung got behind the Myanmar defenders for a shot that went narrowly wide.
And with Myanmar still finding their footing, it was Vietnam who went ahead in the 13th minute when Pham Hai Yen fired in from the edge of the box.
Two missed chances later, Vietnam finally added their second goal of the game in the 43rd minute with Hai Yen setting up Thai Thi Thao as the latter placed the ball beyond the reach of Myanmar keeper Thandar Oo.
Myanmar just can’t seem to get things going and where Vietnam went further ahead in the 61st minute with Hai Yen taking advantage of a miscommunication between Thandar and defender Wai Wai Aung to slip the ball into an open goal.
Vietnam then finished things off with a Tuyet Dung penalty three minutes later after Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy was brought down inside the box.
“The players were nervous and they just could not cope playing under pressure,” added Myanmar head coach Win Thu Moe. “We tried hard but obviously we have to be better in the semifinals.”
