CHONBURI (17 August 2019) – The Philippines made it two for two in Group A of the AFF Women’s Championship 2019 as hosts Thailand opened their campaign with a big 8-0 win over Singapore at the Institute of Physical Education.
The Philippines, who had opened their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Malaysia two days earlier, notched their second full points with a comprehensive 7-0 beating of Timor Leste.
“We created a lot of chances but we failed to score. And this is one area which we need to improve obviously,” said Philippines head coach Marnelli Dimzon. “Even though Timor Leste are a new team, they showed that they can play good football and made it tough for us.”
Added Timor Leste head coach Lee Minyoung: “we played really hard in our first game (against Singapore) and that led to some of the players getting injured. Our physique is not really strong.”
It took the Philippines just five minutes to get on the score sheet through Quinley Quezada before Sara Castaneda then added the second eight minutes later.
Two quick goals later from Kathleen Rodriguez in the 23rd and 45th minute allowed the Philippines to stretch to a 4-0 goals lead at the break.
Hali Candido Long’s penalty conversion in the 62nd minute and then another in the 76th minute was followed by a late strike from Charisa Lemoran for the final score line.
On the other hand, hosts Thailand hit Singapore for eight as the hosts look to defend the title they won last year in Palembang under new head coach Naruephon Kaenson.
With the majority of the players having played at the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, the Thais had no problem stamping their authority with Boothduang Wilaiporn scoring a hat trick with a third minute opener to be followed by two more strikes in the 68th and 90th minute.
The other goal scorers for Thailand were scored by Thongsombut in the 30th minute, Waenngoen Orapin (45th), Pengngam Saowalak (72nd), Makris Irravadee (75th) and Pram-Nak Nutwadee seven minutes to the end.
