CHONBURI (16 August 2019) – Myanmar and Vietnam made a smashing start to their campaign in Group B of the AFF Women’s Championship where between them, they scored a hefty 17 goals at the Insititute of Physical Education.
Myanmar blasted Indonesia 7-0 as Vietnam whipped Cambodia 10-0.
In the first game of the afternoon, striker Yee Yee Oo nailed the opening goal just three minutes into the tie before she completed her hat trick with two more goals in the 27th and 90th minute.
The other goals for Myanmar were scored by Khaing Thazin in the 17th minute, Khin Moe Wai (45th), Win Thingi Tun (66th) and then captain Khin Marlar Tun (76th).
“We missed some scoring chances as the team did not settle down well,” said Myanmar head coach Win Thu Moe. “We need to improve combination play but other than that, it was a good start.”
Replied Indonesia head coach Rully Nere: “the early goal disturbed us. We tried to match them but we had some injuries and we struggled somewhat.”
In the second game, Vietnam pressured Cambodia from the get go and captain Hunyh Nhu found the back of the net early in the third minute before Cambodia conceded an own goal as a minute later off defender Sen Sreymeat.
As Huynh Nhu scored her second and Vietnam’s third by the seventh minute, the 2012 champions were in full control with Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy grabbing a personal best with four goals (17th, 19th, 24th and 69th minute).
Pham Hai Yen’s hat trick (15th, 16th and 84th minute) completed the rout for Vietnam.
“Cambodia is a young team and they tried hard but we stick to our system and we managed to score eight goals,” said Vietnam head coach Mai Duc Chung. “But the second half, Cambodia changed to be defensive and that gave us just two goals.”
Added Cambodia head coach Oum Savong: “we know that it will be a tough game against Vietnam. In the first half, we were nervous. But we improved in the second and did much better.”
