SINGAPORE (17 Sept 2008) – Singapore Armed Forces FC scored a fabulous 2-1 win over Al Nahda of Oman in their quarter-final of the AFC Cup 2008 at the Jalan Besar Stadium last night as Home United were unlucky to be held to a 1-1 draw by Dempo United at the Gachibowli Stadium.
A double from Aleksandar Duric in the 41st and 66th minute gave SAFFC the slim win as they look ahead to the return leg on 23 Sept at the Nizwa Stadium. But whether the one-goal advantage will be enough will unfold soon enough with Al Nahda giving themselves some hope when they scored their only goal in the game off a penalty conversion Yedibahoma Datoma Libambani five minutes to the end. On the other hand, Home United will be looking forward to the return tie following their strong performance in the first leg when they took a 37th minute lead from Mohamad Rosman Sulaiman. But Dempo SC from India gave themselves a lifeline when Mboyo Iyomi scored the equaliser in the 78th minute. However, two other Asean teams in the quarter-finals – Kedah and Perak from Malaysia – suffered humiliating defeats at the hands of their opponents from the Middle East. Kedah, the treble Malaysian champions were thumped 5-0 on the road by Muharraq of Bahrain while Perak conceded a 2-0 home defeat to Safa SC. Muharraq scored off Khaled Salmeen in the 65th minute, Mahmood Abdul Rahman (73rd and 90th), Leandson Da Silva (85th) and Fahad Ahmed Hasan (87th) for their well-deserved win over Kedah. Perak in the meantime were done in by goals from Rony Azar in the 39th minute and Hamid Termina in the 55th minute at the Stadium Perak in Ipoh.
