BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (7 May 2016) – WIJAYA FC moved up to second in Brunei’s DST Super League after beating Tabuan Muda 2-1 last night.
In the match that was agonisingly scoreless in the first half as Tabuan Muda – Brunei’s U21 squad – held firm at the back, it took an early second half poacher’s goal for Wijaya to open account.
Off a free kick that was blocked by Tabuan’s 18-year-old goalkeeper Haimie Anak Nyarin, the waiting Abdul Azim Abdul Rashid pounced on the loose ball for the lead.
Wijaya pushed to extend their advantage but an own goal from Badrul Anak Bujang in the 77th minute almost cost them.
But nine minutes to the end, Wijaya slotted home the winner through Khalil Saab after latching on to a cross from Mohd Shah Azahar Abdullah Ahar.
“The match could have gone either way – especially in the second half,” said Wijaya’s head coach Mahdini Mohammad.
“We are pushing for top three this year, but it will be tough against strong teams such as MS ABDB and Najip I-Team,” said Mahdini.
The win allowed Wijaya FC to move up to second with 12 points – three points behind leaders and defending champions, the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB).
