MANILA (30 July 2011) – Shortly after being denied a place in the third round of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers Michael Weiss, the chief coach of the Philippines, is convinced that his team will be a lot more competitive in four years’ time.
Philippines fell to a 5-1 aggregate defeat to Kuwait in the second round of the qualifiers.
“They may be down right now but I think this team can take this defeat. We have to take it fairly and also acknowledge that we went up against a tough opponent,” said Weiss.
“In terms of the aspects of the game – technique, tactic and conditioning – Kuwait was always one step faster. The team can only learn from this experience. One year ago, who would have thought that we’ll reach this far but we have to continue. I hope that the support will not stop.”
“We still have a long way to go but the Philippines are on the right track. The team will be a contender for the World Cup in the next four years (in my own point of view) but we will need more international exposure and extensive training.”
