HANOI (26 Dec 2011) – If the indication from Nguyen Trong Hy, the president of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) is anything to go by, then Vietnam may look to hire a local coach to lead the Vietnam national team.
Vietnam’s failure to win the gold medal at the SEA Games in Indonesia this year has put tremendous pressure on current Vietnam chief coach Falko Goetz.
“Malaysia or Indonesia are very successful with domestic coaches. In Vietnam’s V-League, domestic coaches are more successful than foreign colleagues. We used to make foreign coaches as default for the national football squad but the situation has changed. It is suitable to choose domestic coaches for the national and U23 teams now,” Trong Hy (pix) added.
Vietnam first hired a foreigner for the national team in 1995 where Karl Heinz Weigang led them to the silver medal at the SEA Games in Thailand. It has been al foreign coaches until the hiring of Goetz earlier this year.
Among the local coaches to be considered are Phan Thanh Hung, Le Huynh Duc, Mai Duc Chung and Le Thuy Hai.
