YANGON (19 October 2023) – Myanmar ‘are still motivated to do one or two surprises’ even though they have been placed in Group B against Japan, North Korea and Syria for the second round qualifiers of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
This follows Myanmar’s 5-1 triumph over Macau in the first-round qualifiers that ended this week.
“We are definitely the underdog in this group, but we are still motivated to do one or two surprises,” said Myanmar head coach Michael Feichtenbeiner.
“At the moment Japan are one of the best teams in the world, but from better teams, you can learn. We never give up easily but we are realistic. We have to learn.
“We have a lot of young players and they can enjoy these matches against Japan, North Korea and Syria. All three are much better in the ranking than us (in the top 100 in the world).”
Myanmar will start their campaign in Group B with an away game to Japan at the Panasonic Stadium in Suita on 16 November 2023.
