Thailand will take on the Lions in Group E of the 2011 Asian Cup qualifiers at the National Stadium in Singapore with the Thais anxious to pick up their first full points after two drawn matches.

“I have studied tapes of Singapore. Although they are a strong side, I think we are capable of getting an impressive result,” said Robson.

Prior to the team’s departure to Singapore, the former England captain led Thailand to the Phuket Kata Cup by winning two matches.

The Thais won the four-team friendly tournament in Phuket by beating Myanmar champions Yadanarbon FC 2-0 in the opening match before edging out Vietnam’s Hoang Anh Gia Lai 7-6 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at the end of regulation.

And a few days ago, Robson’s men drew 1-1 with Syria in a warm-up match at the Thunderdome in Muang Thong Thani.

But while the Thais are confident, they will also be without regular midfielder Phichitphong Cheuichiew – who has been suspended – with Robson now having to call up Sutthim Phukhom as added reinforcement.

Thailand are third in Group E of the 2011 Asian Cup qualifiers after two scoreless draws – in Jordan and at home to three-time champions Iran.

The Thais are one point behind Singapore who have one win and one defeat.

Iran lead the group with one win and one draw, while Jordan are bottom with one point.

Only the top two teams from each of the five qualifying groups advance to the 2011 finals in Qatar.

Thailand have not yet found the net in the qualifying campaign and Robson said Teerathep Winothai and Teerasil Dangda will lead the attack against Singapore.

Assistant coach Steve Darby, who had coached Singapore’s Home United previously, said the game against the Lions was an important game and the Thais must try to avoid defeat.

“We must try to get at least a point in such an important game. The right result in Singapore will be crucial to Thailand’s campaign,” Darby said.
