HANOI (31 Dec 2014) – With an eye on the future rather than going after short team targets, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) have opted to send their Under-19 team for the SEA Games that will be hosted by Singapore next year.
The men’s football event at the SEA Games is for players under the age of 23-years-old.
“Our point is that Vietnam must be a strong team that not only triumphs in one year, but in many years to come. So we decided that the SEA Games team (under-23 years old) must include players who are qualified (in term of age) to compete at the 2017 Games. Therefore, the U19s will be key players at the Games next year,” said Dung.
“They are our future and I totally believe they will play their best for their career, as well as for Vietnam football.”
The U19 team finished as runners-up at the AFF U19 Championship this year after losing in the final to Thailand.
At the AFC U19 tournament in October, Vietnam did not make the cut to the FIFA U20 World Cup after failing to make past the group stage.
