HO CHI MINH CITY (24 Oct 2009) – Asean champions Vietnam conceded a 2-0 loss to a university side from South Korea as Singapore scored their second win in two matches in the 2009 HCM City International Football Tournament at the Thong Nhat Stadium.
A double from Byong-oh just were enough to see off the hosts as Vietnam are now faced with the task of winning the last match against Singapore if they want to lift the title this year. Vietnam were on the offensive right from the start but their failure to make good on the passes seems to frustrate their play. “We controlled the game more in the second half and had more than 80% of the possession. We created more chances but being behind affected the team’s spirit and the second goal really killed us,” said Henrique Calisto, the head coach of Vietnam. Added Vietnam’s assistant coach Le Huynh Duc said: “The Korean players showed a different side to the one against Singapore. They moved more and combined better.” In the earlier match, Singapore beat Turmenistan 4-2 to lead the tournament with six points from two wins. A draw in the final match against Viet Nam on Saturday would be enough for the Singaporeans to take the title for the first time. A first half double by Aleksandar Duric and second half strikes by Masrezwan Masturi and Khairul Amri sealed a comfortable win for the Lions in a match they largely dominated from start to finish. “We played well and created many chances in the game, especially in the first half but because of good goalkeeping and the players’ eagerness to score, we weren’t able to increase the score line,” said Singapore head coach Radojko Avaramovic. “Agu (Casmir) twisted his ankle and Mas (Masrezwan Masturi) hurt his back. Most likely they will not play in the next match against Vietnam.” |
