HANOI (Jan 18, 2007) – Vietnam made the biggest move among Asean countries when they jumped 38 positions to 134th in the world following the latest release by international body FIFA.
Vietnam, who will be facing Thailand in the semi-finals of the Asean Football Championship next week, was boosted by their second-placed finish at the 37th King’s Cup which was played in Bangkok last month. And this week at the Asean Football Championship, the team can certainly look to improve their international standing further following their fine performances in Group B which was played in Singapore. They held host Singapore to a scoreless draw in their first game before producing another stiff performance to hold Indonesia to a 1-1 stalemate. They then rounded their last group match with a 9-0 thrashing of Laos to emerge second in the group on goal difference behind Singapore. In the semi-finals, Vietnam will face Thailand – a repeat of the final of the King’s Cup. But this time in Hanoi, Vietnam will be hoping for a different end to the one they had the last time in Bangkok. |
