KORAT (6 November 2024) – Vietnam delivered a shock 3-2 win over Thailand in their final Group A tie as Australia joined the final four of the ASEAN Futsal Championship 2024 following their thumping 9-2 victory over Cambodia.
In the decisive Group A clash, Vietnam absorbed much of the pressure for both teams to finish tied at the end of the first half after an own goal from Nguyen Thinh Phat in the fifth minute was cancelled out Pham Duc Hoa seven minutes later.
Even though Thailand went ahead through Tanachot Sosawaeng in the 31st minute, Dinh Cong Vien’s two quick goals in the 35th and 36th minutes proved pivotal in giving Vietnam the famous win in Korat.
The win allowed Vietnam to finish as Group A winners while host Thailand was the runners-up.
In the meantime, in Group B, Myanmar’s hope of a place in the next round was crushed when they were outplayed by already-qualified Indonesia 5-1.
Australia joined them in the final four after beating Cambodia 9-2.
Australia’s goals were scored by Corey Justin Sewell (in the 20th and 32nd minute), Jordan Aaron Guerreiro (4th and 21st), Grant Patrick Lynch (2nd), Tyler Kane Garner (23rd), Scott William Rogan (24th), Tyler Kane Garner (25th) and Ahmed Marwan Sweedan (38th).
Cheatuo Keo scored both goals for Cambodia in the 15th and 17th minute.
