HANOI (2 June 2011) – The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) have announced the two squad which will carry the national team’s challenge for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers and also the 2012 Olympic Games qualifiers.
The Vietnam national team will take on Macao in the World Cup (29 June and 3 July 2011) while the Olympic squad will meet Saudi Arabia in the first leg away on 19 June 2011 and the second leg at home on 23 June 2011.
And the emphasis for the VFF is on young players with ten players from the Under-23 squad making the cut for the 25-member national senior team.
While for the Olympic squad, the VFF have included another ten players under the age of 21-years-old.
“We wanted a face-lift for both teams. We hope that young players will give an exciting performance in the World Cup qualifiers and Olympics qualifying round,” said VFF vice chairman Pham Ngoc Vien.
With the position ofn national coach still be officially announced, the VFF have instead appointed coaches Mai Duc Chung and Phan Thanh Hung to take interim charge of the national and Olympic team.
“We recruited the best players, including striker Le Cong Vinh, goalie Duong Hong Son and maestro Pham Thanh Luong. The coaching board also named some youngsters who will debut at the World Cup qualifiers,” said Duc Chung.
The teams will attend a two-week training session at HCM City’s Thanh Long Sports Centre from 13 June to 4 July 2011.
