HANOI (1 Dec 2008) – The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) are prepared to pay up to VND42 billion (over USD2.47 million) to bring English club Manchester United to Vietnam next year.
“This is a huge amount of money but we can arrange it. We can get money from tickets, advertising and broadcasting rights and so on,” said Nguyen Trong Hy, the chairman of the VFF. But while money might not be an issue, negotiations with United are far from over. The English club has put strict conditions on VFF for the one-off game where for example the stadium must have no advertisements while Vietnamese players must only wear jerseys with their names and national flag – no logos or brands of Nike, etc. Trong Hy added that the VFF are also looking at bringing Italian giants AC Milan to Vietnam next year. Negotiations with the Italian partner have passed the 70% stage. “Everything is running well. If AC Milan agrees, the match between the national squad and AC Milan will be held in early September 2009,” Trong Hy added. But while negotiations are still under way with United and Milan, the Vietnam national team have been confirmed to play a friendly match against Olympiakos (a professional club from Greece) in May 2009. |
