PHNOM PENH (28 Sept 2009) – Naga Corp FC picked up their third Cambodia Premier League crown when they beat Khemara Keila FC 2-1 in extra-time in the final ranking match that was played on the weekend at the National Sports Complex.
Naga were the champions in 2004 and 2007. In a closely-contested affair in front of more than 18,000 fans, the score at the end of the regulatory 90 minutes was a deadlock as both teams suffered a flurry of yellow cards from referee of the year Tuy Vichika. Naga had five while Khemara picked up four yellow cards throughout the exchange. But despite losing Tiet Chandra Sokha to a second yellow card offence in the 100th minute of play, Naga held fast to score the first goal of the game just moments later through Sunday Patrick. Sunday then made it a fine weekend for himself and his Naga club when he chalked up his second goal of the afternoon with barely a minute left in the first half of extra-time. Khemara then grabbed a late goal in the game through Omaraka Joel in the 120th minute for the final scoreline. In the meantime, there was no consolation for defending champions Phnom Penh Crown when they finished the season on fourth following their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Preah Khan Reach FC. Despite taking an early lead through Chan Rithy in the eighth minute, Preah Khan fought back with goals off international midfielder Sam El-Naza in the 30th minute and then the winner from Khuon Laboravy in the 42nd minute.
