SHAH ALAM (25 Sept 2014) – With 40 seconds on the clock, Thailand and Indonesia appeared set to continue their fight for a place in the final of the AFF Futsal Championship in extra-time. But Indonesia were in for a rude shock when the Thais sensationally sneaked in the only goal of the game in the dying moments to qualify for the final.
Wanlop Pansomsua, after being set-up by Sorasak Poonjangreed, blasted in the winner to set the stage for a final showdown either against Australia or Vietnam on Saturday. The second semifinal tie takes place later this evening. “We had to be patient this afternoon,” said Thai coach Vic Hermans. “But I have to give it to these players as even without the stars, we showed that we can still play good Futsal.”
Thailand, the defending champions and favourites to retain the title this year, were made to sweat by a determined Indonesian side. The Indonesians in fact had some early shots at goal but were unable to convert them. In the 10th minute, Fhandy Permania missed from the left while Bambang Bayu Saptaji’s shot midway through the second half was saved by the keeper.
Thailand too had their share of opportunities including a clear shot which Wanlop blew away. Wanlop however made up for his misses when he blasted in the winner.
