JANUARY 5, 2007 (BANGKOK) ¨C It took six years but Thailand finally regained the prestigious King’s Cup after defeating Vietnam 3-1 in front of a near capacity crowd at the Supachalasai Stadium here the previous week.
Thailand, whose football fortunes have taken a hit in recent times, showed that they were back on track with smashing performances throughout the King’s Cup tournament. Their sensational run in the annual meet culminated with a glorious victory in the final, thanks to goals from Sutee Suksomkit, Pipat Tonkanya and Suchao Nuthnum. Victory was especially sweet for the hosts as it was the perfect New Year gift for this football-loving nation. “This is a New Year gift for the people and also to celebrate the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King’s accession to the throne,” said a jubilant Charnvit Phalajivin, the Thai national coach. The 30,000 fans had a sense that victory would be theirs very early in the final when star striker Kiatisuk ‘Zico’ Senamuang (pic) almost nodded the Thais ahead. The fans held their breath as Datsakorn Thonglao had two close calls. Finally, their persistence paid off when Kiatisuk’s cross in the 38th minute was met by Sutee who scrambled the ball home. The fans leapt to their feet again, this time just before the break when Punnat Klinsukon’s low cross was turned in by Pipat. Vietnam forced their way back into contention in the 69th minute through Phan Thanh Binh who took advantage of a slip-up in defence. Vietnam’s hopes of a comeback only lasted a minute when Suchao restored the two-goal lead. Charnvit later said that the team combined well and added that it was a great team effort. But he also said that Vietnam made it tough for his players. “They were strong defensively and that’s why it took some time for us to break through,” said Charnvit. Vietnam coach Alfred Riedl admitted that the Thais were a better side. “They were a good side but I felt that we could have played better.” The King’s Cup was an excellent tune-up for both Vietnam and Thailand ahead of the Asean Football Championship, which starts on Jan 12. |
