BANGKOK (July 23, 2007) – Thailand have moved up as the top team in Asean following their fine performance in the Asian Cup 2007.
Although the Thais failed to make the quarter-finals of the tournament, they made sure of the points to move up to 107th in the world following their 1-1 draw against Iraq, 2-0 win over Oman before losing 4-0 in their final Group A match against Australia. Vietnam is the second best team in the Asean region where their quarter-final finish in the Asian Cup made sure that they improved to 117th in the latest world rankings released by FIFA. They included a 2-0 win over Vietnam, a 1-1 draw against Qatar and a 1-4 loss to defending Asian Cup champions Japan in their Group matches. Indonesia’s 2-1 win over Bahrain was enough for them to better their position to 127th even though they conceded a 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia and a 1-0 defeat to South Korea in their other matches. On the hand, ASEAN Football champions Singapore have slipped to 132nd in the standing. For Asean other host Malaysia, they are now in 154th spot following their 5-1 loss to China, 5-0 to Uzbekistan and then a 2-0 defeat to Iran. |
