JAKARTA (Dec 6, 2010) – Thailand almost completely dominated their two earlier matches in Group A but only managed two points, a situation that has put them in a do-or-die position for their last preliminary AFF Suzuki Cup game against high-riding hosts Indonesia tomorrow evening. Only a win will ensure Thailand a place in the semifinals and Bryan Robson is confident his boys will deliver the goods tomorrow.
“We dominated the two matches and missed many chances, so hopefully they have been saving their goals for this match. I have confidence that the players will rise tomorrow. If they believe in themselves, they will win,” said Robson at a Pre-Match Press Conference here today. Robson said that making the semifinals was primary on their minds. “When I was at Manchester United or at Middlesbrough and also with Thailand, there is always pressure ahead of big games. We need to get the results tomorrow to make the semifinals.” He added that his players were used to big games with huge crowds and passionate fans. “The boys are used to it so there’s no fear about the fans here. “ The former Man United star said he would likely have to make a few changes to bring some fresh legs into the team. “I’ve said this earlier that we have problems with fresh players as many were involved in the domestic competition right to the day before we left. Our first session with the entire team was here. There will certainly be some changes to bring some freshness into the team.” Thailand, who now have two points, must beat Indonesia to be sure they make the cut. With five points in the bag, if they defeat the hosts, Malaysia will not be able to sneak in even if they beat Laos. Malaysia has but one point and beating Laos will only give them four points. Robson predicts a tough fight from Indonesia even though they had already won the group. “Indonesia have got the job done, they are top of the group and in a good position. The coach may not field some players as he may to protect them or some may have yellow cards. Bringing in new players is a concern as it may work the other way.” He explained: “These new guys will be fresh and will be out to prove themselves to the coach and fans. They have been on the bench and this would be their chance.” Meanwhile, Indonesian assistant coach Wolfgang Pikal confirmed that there would be some changes in the team. “Some players will be rotated and there may be about 30 percent of changes. Our target is still to deliver a good game and win the match. We’re not here for a holiday and must give our best.” He said Indonesia respected Thailand whom he said would be going on the offensive as they needed to win. “This is their last chance and we can expect it to be tough,” Pikal admitted. “We have to be wary of their key players, Datsakorn (Thonglao) who is the playmaker, Sarayoot (Chaikamdee) who is a good striker, Teerasil (Dangda) who has scored several goals against us in the past and Suree (Sukha) who is very fast down the flank and sends in dangerous crosses.” |
