BANGKOK (8 Sept 2008) – Thailand were denied the overall title in the Thailand 5s last night by Argentina who swept the crown on better goal difference at the Nimibutr Stadium.
The score at the end of an exhilarating encounter between hosts Thailand and Argentina was 2-2, which put both teams on the same seven points after three matches in the four-team tournament. But with Argentina having thrashed Vietnamese club side Thai Son Nam 14-0 as against Thailand’s 7-1 win over the same outfit, it allowed the visitors to win the overall title. It was Thailand, who dominated the exchange scoring twice in the first nine minutes of the game off Prasert Innui in the third minute and Lertchai Issarasuwipakorn in the ninth. But that was to be Thailand’s only goals in the game as Argentina came fighting back with their first goal from Maina Lucas in the 19th minute and then the equaliser off Wilhelm Fernando just two minutes after the restart. In the meantime, Japan completed the fixtures with their first win of the tournament when they blasted whipping boys Thai Son Nam 12-1. Yusuke Komiyama started the ball rolling with the first goal in the very first minute of play before Japan added further goals off Rikaruda Higa (10th, 15th, 24th, 26th and 37th), Yuki Kanayama (26th and 31st), Kataro Inaba (6th), Takuya Sizumura (17th), Kenta Fujii (17th) and Wataru Kitahara (33th).
