SINGAPORE (19 March, 2008) – Thailand clinched the 22nd Lion City Cup in dramatic fashion when they beat the United Arab Emirates 4-3 on penalties.
The score at the end of regulation was 1-1. But it was the Middle Eastern side who were the early aggressors when Abdulla Saeed converted a penalty after striker Salem Saleh was brought down inside the Thai box. However, Thailand clawed back into the match and were rewarded in the 50th minute when striker Wirawat Phonchiangkhwang capitalised on a defensive error to blast home. In the ensuing penalties, UAE’s Mohd Salem’s ballooned from the spot while Hareth Saeed’s effort was denied to give the Thais a well-deserved victory. In an earlier match for the Plate, Australia beat Uzbekistan 3-1 while Vietnam overcame Singapore B 2-0 to clinch the Bowl as Singapore A registered a narrow 1-0 victory over Chinese Taipei for the Shield. 22ND LION CITY CUP CHAMPIONSHIP 2008 Cup Final (Jalan Besar Stadium) Plate Final (Jalan Besar Stadium) Bowl Final (Jalan Besar Stadium) Shield Final (Singapore Sports School) |
