SINGAPORE (8 Feb 2012) – Tampines Rovers began their 2012 campaign on the right footb when they beat Home United 2-0 to lift the season-opening Great Eastern Charity Shield.
In the match that was played at the Jalan Besar Stadium, Tampines the 2011 S-League champions, proved that they can still be lethal without injured veteran striker Aleksandar Duric in the starting line-up when Davor Piskor nailed the opening goal just four minutes into the tie.
Gligor Gligorov then rounded off things with the second goal for Tampines right at the hour mark to give them their first silverware of the season.
“I asked the players to keep the spirit they showed last season by playing for each other, but it will be a long season and we won’t be getting too carried away with this result. We know Home United were missing some players and will get better,” said Tampines chief coach Steven Tan.
Offered Lee Lim Saeng, the coach for Home United: “I must congratulate Tampines and say that it is all my fault that we did not do well today.
“They found our weakest points and we did not do our homework well. We changed a lot of players since last season, and I am still learning about their strongest and weakest points.”
