SINGAPORE (20 August 2009) – A first half goal from David Tan was enough to give Tampines Rovers a slim 1-0 win over Balestier Khalsa at the Toa Payoh Stadium as the former moved up to second in the S-League.
David’s strike in the 21st minute of play was the only bright spark in the match as Tampines picked up 44 points from 24 matches to keep just a point ahead of third-placed DPMM FC of Brunei. DPMM were also on the winning side this week as they sidestepped the Super Reds 3-2 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium. Despite trailing twice in the game – through captain Yu Hyun-koo in the seventh minute and Choi Dong Soo in the 70th minute – DPMM, the Singapore League Cup champions, bounced back off Helmi Zambin in the 61st minute and Abdelhamid Berguiga in the 85th minute. And three minutes later, the Bruneians faithful were rewarded with the winner when Safari Wahit poked in the ball in a goalmouth melee to give DPMM the full points in front of their more than 30,000 fans. “We were close to losing this game but we managed to turn it around, and I am really happy with our defenders many of whom were playing for the first time in their positions,” said Vjeran Simunic, the head coach for DPMM FC. “We have been unbeaten at this stadium for one year and three months because I do not accept our 6-1 loss to Home United.” SAF FC are still at the top of the S-League – comfortably with 55 points from 24 matches. |
