SINGAPORE (20 Feb, 2008) – Former champions Tampines Rovers had a great start to their S-League campaign this year when they romped to an easy 2-0 away win over Gombak United at the Stadium Jurong West.
The win made sure that Tampines are on a better goal difference over the Super Reds who also began their season on a winning note when they edged Woodlands Wellington 2-1. With new captain Mustafic Fahrudin at the helm, Tampines quickly took the lead in the 33rd minute off Alif Shafaein’s wicked chip. The loss of Kingsley Njoku for an off the ball incident with Tampines’ “It was a good performance, we had some players out but we did very well,” added Vorawan Chitavanich, the head coach of Tampines. The Super Reds on the other hand, had Kim Jae Hong’s last gasp goal to thank in their 2-1 win over Woodlands at the Yishun Stadium. Jae Hong created the first goal for the Super Reds in the fifth minute when he floated in a free kick for Sin Hyun Ho to slip it past Zahid Ahmad before Woodlands came back with the equaliser in the 24th minute off Akihiro Nakamura. And three minutes to the end, a delicate chip from Jae Hong ensured the Super Reds a well-deserved three points in their first game of the season. In the only other match played, the Young Lions were held to a scoreless draw by Sengkang. |
