SINGAPORE (25 March, 2008) – A 2-1 win over Albirex Niigata at the Yishun Stadium has given the Super Reds their place at the top of the S-League on the weekend.
The Super Reds, who have won all their six matches thus far in the season, are on top of the standings with 18 points but having played a game more against second-placed Singapore Armed Forces FC with 15 points. Although the Super Reds were a little slow off the block and despite several misses in the opening half hour, duly took the first goal of the game in the 38th minute when Seo Su Jon made good on a pass from Jeon Byung Euk. Short on experience, Albirex were struggling after falling behind and even though they tried hard to get forward, there was just no getting past the stiff Korean defence. On 72nd minute, Shin Young Chul rifled in a shot for Super Reds to grab their second goal of the evening while Albirex pulled in a late goal off a header from Yuji Tamiya. “We had a few problems before the game as it had been raining for the past few days and it affected the condition of our ground and we were concerned about this,” said Jeon Kyeong Joon, the head coach for the Super Reds. “But the players gave a good performance and I am satisfied as they went up against an Albirex team who played better than I expected.” The Super Reds will be up against Home United next. And Home United are in confident mood at the moment following their 6-1 thrashing of Geyland United in their last match. 2008 NTUC INCOME – YEO’S S-LEAGUE TABLE 1. SUPER REDS 18pts (+6) 2.
