BANGKOK (Dec 18, 2007) – Thailand’s best-known Futsal player Somkid Chuenta recently completed his move to Kazakhstan club side Aktobe BTA on a year’s contract for an undisclosed fee.
The transfer created history not only for Thailand but also for Southeast Asia when he became the first fully-pledged Futsal professional to ply his trade outside of his home country. Previously with I AM Sports in the Liga Futsal Thailand and apparently close to signing for CAT Telecom for the new season, Somkid impressed Aktobe BTA’s officials during Thailand’s recent three-week training stint in Spain. “It is really an honour to become the first Thai player to move abroad to play as a professional. This will definitely create better awareness about Thailand’s league, national team and the players,” said Somkid, who has been playing for the Thailand national team since 1999. “We have a lot of talent that is coming through and I hope that people will take notice of this.” Apart from playing in the Kazakhstan Futsal league, Somkid will also have the chance to impress in Europe where Aktobe BTA take part in the Recopa Cup which is organized by UEFA. |
