SINGAPORE (14 June 2017) – In preparations for the qualifying round of the AFC Under-23 Championship in July, the Singapore U22 team will head to Qatar for training and friendlies.
Two matches against their counterparts from Qatar has been planned for 15 June and 17 June.
“Playing strong teams like Qatar will allow us to better gauge our abilities in the lead-up to our important tournaments in the coming months – in fact, they reached the semi-finals of the AFC Under-23 Championships last year,” said Richard Tardy, head coach of Singapore’s U22.
“If not for conceding late goals to South Korea in the semi-final and Iraq in the third placing match, they would have been one of the three Asian teams in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.
“Having said that, we do have players like Irfan Fandi and Hami Syahin who have been training with the National Team – I am sure that they will be able to add valuable experience to the squad, and that our boys will do their best to hold their own against such tough opponents.”
