SINGAPORE (5 July 2012) – Following the confirmation this week that Singapore will host the SEA Games in 2015, Chan Chun Sing, Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, is ‘quietly confident’ that they can finally be football champions.
“We know at the SEA Games, the most important gold is the football gold. Every nation will go for it, so of course if we can do that (on our home ground), that will be the icing on the cake,” said Chun Sing to the New Paper.
“These are very promising teams. The Under-17s have done well at the YOG and last year’s Canon Lion City Cup, while the Under-16s have done well in the same competition for two years.
“I’m quietly confident that if we can do that, they will do us proud in the SEA Games 2015, together with other players from other age groups.”
Singapore had never won the gold medal at the SEA Games with their best result being the three silvers they won in 1983, 1985 and 1989.
