VIENTIANE (13 Dec 2009) – Singapore will be looking to exact revenge on Vietnam in the semi-finals of the men’s football event tomorrow evening at the Chao Anuvong Stadium.
Team manager Eugene Loo said that the two sides had met before a few months back at the VFF-Smartdoor Championship 2009 with Vietnam emerging tops following the only goal of the game coming off Thanh Binh in the 36th minute. But Eugene was quick to point out that in that match, the Singapore side did not have the services of defender Shaiful Esah and midfielder Hariss Harun. The duo, who scored three out of four goals for Singapore in the preliminary round of Group B, were on duty for the Singapore national side in the 2011 Asian Cup qualifying match against Thailand. “We are prepared to take on any team but as is common knowledge, the semi-final match will be different,” said Eugene. “The best team on the day will usually win. It is the team which take their chances well and make less mistakes which will win.” Eugene revealed that head coach Terry Pathmanathan had purposely rested several of his first-team players so as to give them the chance to rest up for what will be a tough encounter against Vietnam. “We are already in the semi-finals, so there’s no point risking the players in getting yellow cards or being injured,” added Eugene.
