SINGAPORE (6 Nov 2010) – Singapore finished second in the VFF Cup this year when they beat the Korean Under-23 team 2-0 – thanks to a brace from veteran striker Aleksandar Duric at the My Dinh stadium in Hanoi this evening.
The Lions, who had conceded a 2-1 loss to DPR Korea in their match of the tournament, took to the game on a confident note as Duric (pix) where after missing several chances opened the scoring in the 44th minute with a stinger from 30 meters out. Duric then grabbed his second of the game after latching on to a Fazrul Nawaz cross in the 58th minute for the Lions’ first win of the tournament albeit it is a little too late for them to win the championship. “The performance of our team really surprised me. We beat, in my opinion, the best team in the tournament. We played extremely well. The players were disciplined and focused in their tasks and they fully deserved the win against the Koreans,” said Radojko Avramovic, the chief coach of Singapore. “The team gave it all today and I am very happy with some of their performances. Duric scored two goals today and Hassan (Sunny) played very well and this team has the belief that they can play and win against strong opponents.” With the win, Singapore finished second in the VFF Cup this year following DPR Korea’s 2-0 win over hosts Vietnam in their final match of the tournament. The Korean U23 team came in third while Vietnam finished fourth. Both Singapore and Vietnam are using the tournament in preparation for the AFF Suzuki Cup next month. |
