SINGAPORE (Jan 17, 2007) – Defending champions Singapore and Vietnam completed the cast for the semifinals of the Asean Football Championship but Indonesia had to settle for an early exit from the regional tournament.
The Lions were held to a 2-2 draw at the National Stadium but it was enough to see them through to the next round. For Indonesia, however, the draw left them in third spot behind Singapore and Vietnam, who had whipped Laos 9-0. The top three all completed their Group B fixtures with five points each but Indonesia obviously were squeezed out on an inferior goal difference. Singapore, winners two years ago, will face off with traditional rivals, Malaysia in the first leg semifinal showdown on Jan 23. Thailand, the Group A champions, will take on Vietnam in Hanoi on Jan 24. The second leg of the semifinals will be held on Jan 27 and Jan 28 respectively. The final will be on Jan 31 and Feb 4. |
