HO CHI MINH CITY (2 August 2009) – Despite not having the best of preparation, the Singapore national Under-19 squad will be aiming for a place in the semi-finals of the Asean Football Federation (AFF) U19 Championship which kicks off on Tuesday here.
Head coach Salim Moin said the players should always be at their best and that they should treat the honour of playing for Singapore with the right mental attitude. “I know that we did not have the best of preparation with some players being committed to their studies with the academy while others had to do their duty in the national league but that should not be used as an excuse,” said Salim. “The players should look at this tournament as the best avenue to gain experience in preparation for the AFC U19 qualifiers in November. “I hope that the players are not looking at taking part in this meet as just to complete the numbers.” Other than Australia in their Group A, the Singapore side will also be up against Cambodia and favourites Thailand. In Group B are hosts Vietnam, Malaysia, Timor Leste and Myanmar. To strengthen their team further, Singapore have included seven players from their Young Lions squad who are playing in the S-League – among them strikers Khairul Nizam and Eugene Luo.
