BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (March 5, 2007) – Brunei took a step closer to making the semi-finals of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy when they beat Philippines 3-2 in the second match of Group B tonight.
Even though they had to wait until the very last minute of play at the Berakas Sports Complex, it seems to be worth all the anxiety when Mohd Kamarul Ariffin slotted home the winner. However, the match seems to be a little out of reach for the host at the start when they found themselves done in by Fabroada in the 3rd minute and Philip Younghusband’s penalty. But a second-half fight back saw Khairol Anwar scoring the first goal in the 55th minute before Abdul Hafiz slotted home the equalizer in the 88th minute. Just when the game seems destined for a draw, Mohd Kamarul was on hand to give Brunei the boost with a goal deep in injury time. IN THE MEANTIME, Myanmar followed up their big win in the first game with another thrashing when they blasted Cambodia 7-0. Following a nervous start, a goal in the 29th minute through Si Thu Than was just what Myanmar needed before Aung Myo Thant added two further goals in the 38th and 56th minute. Myanmar’s other goals came off Htoo Kyaw in the 67th minute, Payae Phyo Oo (68th and 73rd) and Ye Wai Yan Soe (75th).
