ALOR STAR (4 Jan 2009) – Selangor picked up their first silverware in 2009 when they beat Kedah 4-1 in their opening match of the Super League at the Stadium Darulaman last night.
The win allowed Selangor to win the Charity Shield which is the curtain raiser to the Malaysian League season. The nightmare which haunted Malaysian international Mohd Helmi Eliza Elias at the recent AFF Suzuki Cup 2008 continued to the first matchday of the new Malaysian Super League season when his blunder cost Kedah three goals in the first half. It began as early as the third minute when a grounder from Selangor’s Mohd Amri Yahyah off a freekick found its way through in a sea of legs as Helmi failed to make the save. But the cheer of well over 30,000 fans pushed the treble champions to trudge on ahead where in the seventh minute, an attempt from Badrol Bakhtiar narrowly missed the upright. However, Helmi continued to disappoint the hijau kuning outfit where in the 32nd minute he inadvertently gave Selangor their second goal when he punched in an attempt from youngster Zameer Zainun. Helmi then completed his nightmare three minutes later when he failed to stop a header from Amri, who made good on a freekick off R. Surendran. Kedah coach Azraai Khor Abdullah was quick to make the change to substitute keeper Mohd Al-Hafiz Hamzah. The northerners tried to get back into the game in the second half but the red card on Mohd Farizal Rozali in the 54th minute compounded matters. Four minutes later, Selangor slammed home their fourth goal of the game off striker Mohd Safee Sali’s 25metre stinger. The homesters finally scored their one and only goal of the game a minute to the end off winger Khyril Muhymeen Zambri. |
