NAYPYITAW (17 Dec 2013) – Despite making the final for the second edition of the SEA Games in a row, Vietnam coach Sergio Gargelli was still not a happy man.
Vietnam won their semi-final tie against Indonesia 3-1 to stamp their place as one of the kingpins of ASEAN Futsal. But as Gargelli pointed out afterwards, Vietnam did not play their usual game and made a lot of mistakes.
“The truth is that we made a lot of mistakes in this game,” said the Italian. “I know some people don’t want to hear that since we are in the final but this is the truth. We were not playing our usual game, and we are lucky to win, really.
“We cannot play like this against Thailand (in the final).”
Vietnam, the silver medallist in Jakarta two years ago, were a little off colour at the start as they lacked movement and could score only one goal through Vu Xuan Du in the 13th minute.
With the score 1-0 to Vietnam’s advantage, Indonesia pushed hard in search of the equaliser but instead they fell further behind when Ly Khanh Hung nailed the second goal in the 24th minute.
Through power play, Indonesia managed to close the game to 2-1 with a simple tap in from Ardy Suardy in the 35th minute. But Vietnam countered just several seconds later with Pham Truong Luan scoring the third goal to put the game beyond reach.
“We made some mistakes in the first half. Our counter attacks did not work out,” said Indonesian coach Andri Irawan. “We are sorely disappointed of course. Our power play also did not pan out the way we expected it to.”
