YANGON (15 Dec 2013) – Myanmar are a point away from the semifinals and fans here in Yangon are rushing to purchase tickets for the match against Indonesia tomorrow evening in anticipation of a positive result.
Myanmar fans are not just hoping for a win tomorrow but they are already dreaming of a gold medal in the most prestigious event of the entire SEA Games. The mother-of-all-golds is an understatement looking at the level of expectations here in Myanmar.
One can understand the hunger for the football gold medal which Myanmar last won in 1973 when it was still known as the SEAP Games. In 1993, Myanmar made the final but lost to Thailand.
This year Myanmar, with the benefit of home ground, stand their best chance to win a gold after 40 years.
This morning, several hours before the tickets went on sale today, long queues of up to 0.5km long were formed at the stands.
According to the organisers, tickets went on sale beginning from 10.30am this morning at four venues including at the Myanmar Football Federation office and the Aung San Stadium.
Organisers have said that fans are already trying to purchase tickets for the semifinals and final.
