SENAYAN (9 Nov 2011) – Singapore had to suffer some harrowing moments this evening before a late fight back saw them drilling a 2-1 win over Cambodia on the second match day of Group A that was played at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
The Cambodians, who were lambasted by half a dozen goals by hosts Indonesia two days earlier, were more determined on the night as they fend off Singapore’s early onslaught.
But off a quick counter-attack in the 35th minute, a cross from the right saw the unmarked Chhin Chhoeun blasting the ball in for what was a surprised lead against the Young Lions.
The Singapore bench became more and more animated towards the closing stages of the first half with their forwards either missing with the half chances or they just could not find the target altogether.
However in the 55th minute, the Singapore side finally put a smile on chief coach Slodoban Pavkovic’s face when Muhammad Khairul Nizam slammed the equaliser.
Some persistent pressure afterwards, saw the Cambodian defence in disarray and in the 75th minute, Singapore finally found the opening to put their noses in front with Navin Neil Vanu nodding in a cross from the right.
With the win, Singapore have now picked up four points from two matches – the same with Malaysia, who had earlier beaten Thailand by the same 2-1 scoreline.
Singapore’s next match will be against hosts Indonesia in two days while Thailand will take on Cambodia.
