JAKARTA (6 Nov 2011) – While the Indonesian team went to visit an orphanage as part of the team’s effort to maintain focus, the Cambodian squad are busy looking for consistency.
Rahmad Darmawan, the chief coach of the Indonesian squad, said that by visiting the orphanage during Idul Adha, he is hoping that his players will keep their spirit enflamed for their first game against Cambodia.
“I hope that from their visit to the orphanage, they will be motivated to play better for the Indonesian people. They are certainly better off than the kids at the orphanage and they need to realize that in whatever they do, they need to give nothing less than 100%,” said Rahmad.
“I don’t think that this visit to the orphanage is a distraction. It is more of a spiritual lesson. They still come to concentrate during training twice a day, so it really does not affect their programme.”
Hosts Indonesia are in Group A of the biennial meet where they will take on Cambodia in their opening game tomorrow night at the Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno.
The other teams in the group are Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
In the meantime, the several erratic performances in their last few games have prodded Cambodian chief coach Lee Tae Hoon to demand more consistency from his chargers – especially when they will take on the hosts in their very first game of the competition.
Several poor results led to the team’s failure to defend the BIDC Cup they won last year while in their last friendly, they fell to a 1-0 loss to the Nepal national team.
“We can ill afford to take it easy in the first game, not when we are playing against the hosts in front of their die hard home fans,” said Tae Hoon.
“We are still looking for consistency and the players must realized that they have the full 90 minutes to play, not just concentrate in patches and hope that we can pull through as a team.
“We are still looking for that consistency and I hope that by playing in a big game in the first match, it will prod a better performance from the players.”
