JAKARTA (9 Nov 2011) – The Indonesian Police will be stepping up security against fans who plan to bring in fireworks at SEA Games football venues – at either the main Gelora Bung Karno Stadium or the Lebak Bulus Stadium.
Police has made the announcement of a total ban on bringing in any incendiary items by fans.
“We want the public to understand that it is for security reasons. They need to know that taking fireworks and other dangerous items into the venues can endanger themselves as well as others,” said police chief of operations Sr. Comr. Agung Budi Maryoto this week.
Agung said that that the police had confiscated 30 fireworks items from people entering gate 11 of the Lebak Bulus Stadium to watch a recent SEA Games match. They will also be stepping up security and checking people entering the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
“Maybe next week it will be packed as the tournament progresses. We will carry out security measures according to procedure,” he added.
Hosts Indonesia opened their campaign in Group A with a 6-0 thrashing of Cambodia. Their next game will be against Singapore on 11 November 2011 at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
