CIBUBUR (22 Nov 2011) – Indonesia took some solace in men’s Futsal when they beat Malaysia 3-2 to win the bronze medal at the POPKI in Cibubur this morning.
The hosts, who were edged out by Thailand in the semi-finals yesterday, were more aggressive this time round although in the opening first half, the Malaysians stood firm to restrict the hosts to just 1-0 with the only goal coming off Hairul Ohorella in the 19th minute.
Vennard Hutabarat then doubled Indonesia’s lead with the second goal on 25 minutes before an own goal from Socrates Matulessy two minutes later sparked fight back from the Malaysians.
They were quick to draw level through Khairul Rizuan Harif Pagilah at the half hour mark to stutter the Indonesians frontline.
But the hosts maintained their composure for Hairul to nail the winner six minutes to the end for the win.
“We might not have won the gold but at least we managed to get on to the podium,” said Vernard after the match.
