JAKARTA (16 Nov 2011) – After being left out of the last SEA Games in Laos, futsal makes its official return to the biennial multi-sports carnival tomorrow morning with matches being contested in the men’s and women’s categories.
Thailand, the defending men’s champions and among the top three ranked teams in Asia, will be the favoruites and they will open their campaign against Myanmar.
Earlier, hosts Indonesia will get the men’s competition on the road with a tie against Vietnam at 1530hrs tomorrow afternoon in Cibubur, located just outside the city centre.
The battle for every team here will be to beat Thailand, listed among the leading teams in the world. They are not likely to field their best side but they will still be a side to contend with.
Indonesia have already offered their futsal teams cash bonusses if they win the gold. But to do this, they must have to defeat the Thais and that’s going to be a tall order.
Like the men, the women are also the defending champions from 2007. Indonesia may have a better go at wresting the women’s gold.
The return of futsal to the SEA Games will be greeted with delight by fans of the indoor version of the sport which was left out of the 2009 Games in Laos.
