BANGKOK (6 June 2013) – In a matter of less than 48 hours, Winfried Schaefer has mutually ended his contract with the FA of Thailand (FAT) to sign with defending Thai Premier League champions Muang Thong United.
Following the German’s failure to hand Thailand their fourth AFF crown last year, the relationship was further strained after several uninspiring results in the qualifying round of the AFC Asian Cup.
But two days ago, a mutual agreement to separate was reached between FAT and Schaefer which in turn led to the latter signing up for Muang Thong following the departure of Serbian Slavisa Jokanovic.
Schaefer, who has signed up on six-month contract, will take charge of his first TPL game on Sunday against Bangkok Glass.
“I relish the opportunity to get back to the daily work of club football,” said Schaefer. “The people at Muang Thong United asked me to stay a bit longer in Thailand and to help them in a not so pleasant situation. So I decided not to leave right away, but to take the chance to help a friend.
“Muang Thong United have supported me always and now I will try to give a bit of support back.”
