BANGKOK (18 Feb 2012) – The Siam Cement Group confirmed this week their purchase of 30% into former Thai Premier League champions Muang Thong United. The deal is worth THB 600 million (USD 19 million ).
Muang Thong chairman Pongsak Polanan said that SCG’s involvement would help the club become one of the leading sides in Asia within three to five years. SCG managing director Pramote Techasupatkul said the investment would help lift the standards of Thai football and expand the firm’s reputation.
Following the investment, the Kirins will be renamed SCG Muang Thong United from next season onwards. The stadium will also become SCG Stadium starting next month.
SCG was the major sponsor of TLP club Samut Songkhram FC for the last several years but following the latter’s poor finishing at the end of the 2011 season, SCG have decided against extending their sponsorship.
