SINGAPORE (27 Feb 2009) – Former Thai captain Therdsak Chaiman was again the toast for Singapore Armed Forces FC (SAFFC) as they beat PSMS Medan of Indonesia 2-1 in the play-offs to make the main draw of the AFC Champions League (ACL) 2009.
Therdsak, who was instrumental in SAFFC’s 4-1 win over Thai champions Provincial Electric Authority the previous week, scored the first goal before setting up the second for the Warriors to be the first Singapore side to make the ACL. In the match was played at the Jalan Besar Stadium, Therdsak clinched the lead on 36 minute when he weaved past Medan defender Esteban Tejera before drilling a low shot past Indonesian international keeper Markus Harison. Six minutes into the second half however, Medan fought back when Elie Aiboy played the ball to Mario Costas who curled a shot to the back of SAFFC’s net. Both sides had several clear chances in the closing stages of a highly entertaining match but with the game forced into extra-time, it was SAFFC who took the lead again in the 99th minute of play. Ahmad Latiff picked up a diagonal pass from Therdsak before blasting in from an acute angle for SAFFC’s second goal of the evening. Any hope of a comeback from Medan was dashed when their frustration turned physical for Oktovianus Maniani and Edi Sukamoto to be sent off for picking up their second bookable offence. |
