HANOI (13 July 2009) – Three-times FIFA World Player of the Year, Ronaldo might be heading to Vietnam at the end of the year for an exhibition match with his club Corinthians.
The former World Cupper hauled up the FIFA World Player of the Year in 1996, 1997 and 2002. Nguyen Trong Hy, the chairman of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) said that he has spoken to Brazilian Ambassador to Vietnam João Mendonca Lima Neto of the possibility in a recent meeting. Trong Hy had also requested the Brazilian Embassy and the Brazilian Ministry of Sports to convey the VFF’s invitation to Brazilian legend Pele. The Brazilian Sports Ministry had since informed VFF that Corinthians were willing to come to Vietnam to play a friendly match against the Vietnamese national squad – as part of an activity to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Vietnam-Brazil diplomatic relationships. Trong Hy indicated that the friendly game might take place in late November with the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi a possibility. Corithians had won the Sao Paulo state championship two months ago and recently they took the Brazilian Cup. Ronaldo, who won the World Cup in 1994 and 2008, returned to Brazil this year after 14 seasons in European football with PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Milan. |
