JAKARTA (22 Aug 2008) – Brunei’s preparation for the AFF Suzuki Cup 2008 qualifiers in October suffered a reality check last night when they conceded a 2-0 loss to the Indonesia Under-21 side in the Pertamina Independence Cup 2008.
With the official draw of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2008 and also the qualifiers to be done in less than a week on 27 August 2008 in Jakarta, the defeat has certainly put a damper in the Brunei camp. In the Group A match that was played at the Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno, the Indonesia U21 side scored twice in the 57th minute off “I am proud that we have been invited to this tournament although I must say that I am not at all happy with the quality of the refereeing,” said Vjeran Simunic, the head coach for Brunei. “I believe that we were denied on several occasions in the second half where we felt that we could have come back into the match.” In the meantime, the Indonesia national team delivered a thumping on another Asean neighbour with a 7-0 beating of Cambodia. Both Cambodia and Brunei are using the Pertamina Independence Cup 2008 as a tune-up for their preparation for the AFF Suzuki Cup 2008 qualifiers which will be held in Phnom Penh in October. |
